With the sage guidance of Mark Phillips, a.k.a. Cat Dirty, participants in our Merch Mania class apply a full spectrum of creative skills (ideation, articulation, drafting, composition, character development, thematic style) to making merch! Think stickers, buttons, clocks, keychains, mini zines, T-shirts, and more. Students will develop their own merch lines and learn some principles of graphic design, product development, and marketing—and get a small taste of what it means to start and run a creative small business. Consider this Hot Pizza’s entry-level MBA. 😊 OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! Runs March 23 and 30; April 13, 20, 27; and May 4.

For 6 WEEKS starting March 23

Using more Lego than you’ve ever seen, along with our own handmade backdrops, props, tools, and scenery, students will experience the magical process of creating their very own stop-motion animation masterpieces. This class requires students to bring in their own tablets; we use free stop-motion animation applications. (If tech is a barrier to your student joining class, please reach out). OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! Runs March 23 and 30; April 13, 20, 27; and May 4

Tuesdays from 4–6 p.m.
For 6 WEEKS starting March 24

Designing, constructing, painting, sewing, drawing, pasteling, trying, failing, building, destroying, and more, more, more! The Deep Dish Studio gives students a rare chance to invent and create with all kinds of media at their fingertips. Offerings change each week and skills build upon each other; the end result is a wide array of creation and a real facility (and confidence!) with all kinds of making. OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! Runs March 24 and 31 and April 7, 14, 21, and 28.

Tuesdays from 6:30–8 p.m.
For 6 WEEKS starting March 24

With phenom Jes Bonnie as the studio’s fearless leader, students will create scaffolded projects that incorporate pencil, graphite, pastels, acrylic paint, clay, found/discarded materials, and so much more! This is a chance for older Hot Pizza students to hone their skills and fully express themselves. OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! A short materials list will be shared with students before the first class. Runs March 24 and 31 and April 7, 14, 21, and 28

Wednesdays from 4–6 p.m.
For 6 WEEKS starting March 25

This new class, taught by artist extraordinaire Steve Bynoe, explores manga! Learn and refine your own manga style by looking to manga greats such as Son Goku (Dragon Ball), Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece), Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto), Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, and more. We’ll teach students about the effects of exaggerated expressions, unique panel layouts, and fast-paced action so they can develop their own manga worlds. The class will also look to Heta-Uma (“Bad-Good”), Garo style (underground), the Surrealist/Tsuge school, global manga, and more! OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! Runs March 25 and April 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29.

Thursdays from 4–6 p.m.
For 6 WEEKS starting March 26

Steve Bynoe, of Atrium fame, leads this new character and toy prototyping lab, where students will practice and refine their drawing styles through character creation and story development. We’ll learn the fundamental tools of graphic storytelling such as storyboarding, backgrounding, line work, and more. Students’ skill-building will culminate in transforming these creations into their very own three-dimensional toy prototypes, with backdrops/dioramas and a full package design. OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! Runs March 26 and April 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.

Fridays from 4–6 p.m.
For 6 WEEKS starting March 27

Students learn how images and words work together to tell strong visual stories—from character design and expressions to settings, panels, and pacing. Using drawing alongside materials like cardboard, clay, and foam core, students will build worlds inspired by their own comics, as well as idea-creation stations, their own (actually interesting!) brain “rot” characters, and more. This class develops storytelling skills, visual literacy, problem-solving, and creative confidence while encouraging experimentation and imaginative thinking. Taught by the amazing Mike Ellis, of Pieces of Eights fame. Oh! And actual hot pizza will be served in the last class! Runs March 27; April 10, 17, 24; May 1 and 8.
