Led by the wonderful Madeleine Bell—whose deep sewing knowledge is genuinely amazing—this class transforms Hot Pizza into a buzzing sewing atelier! We’ll explore hand-sewing, machine-sewing, embroidery, knitting, and playful projects like handmade scrunchies, then bring it all together in a capstone sewing project of each student’s own design. Think: a stuffed animal, a fashion piece, a cozy accessory, or something totally unexpected. All levels welcome! No sewing experience required—just curiosity! Oh! In The Slice, students will learn how to create a magazine from start to finish — brainstorming ideas, writing stories, conducting interviews, taking photographs, designing layouts, selling community ads, printing, and turning it all into a real magazine to share throughout the neighbourhood.
Students will try music and ice cream reviews, investigative reporting, comics, recommendations, photography, design, and more, while learning how words, images, and big ideas come together on the page. Perfect for curious kids who like making things, asking questions, sharing opinions, and collaborating on something real. Taught by renowned journalist Amil Niazi, guest host of CBC’s Commotion, author of Life After Ambition, and founder of alt weekly Only, with Hot Pizza founder Julia Dault. Oh! Using drawing alongside materials like cardboard, clay, and foam core, students will build worlds inspired by their own comics. This class develops storytelling skills, visual literacy, problem-solving, and creative confidence while encouraging experimentation and imaginative thinking. Taught by the amazing Mike Ellis, of Pieces of Eights fame. Oh! And actual hot pizza will be served in the last class! Runs September 15, 22, 29; October 6, 13, 20, and 27. For older Hot Pizza students who are ready for more, Studio Supreme is a mixed-media class that gives kids room to build skills, experiment with materials, and make ambitious, expressive projects. Students will work with pencil, graphite, pastels, acrylic paint, clay, found and discarded materials, and more, as they develop their own ideas from start to finish. This class is a great fit for students who love making art, want to try new techniques, and are excited to push their creativity further in a supportive studio environment. OH! The Inside/Outside Studio is exactly that: we’ll use the studio as our home base, then head outside where we’ll draw and experiment with nature-based making—sculptures from found materials, rubbings, plein-air charcoal drawing, and inky mark-making (including mixing our own ink), and more! Special projects will also include watercolours and mixed-media creations, paper-making (with foraged flowers!), flag-making, fabric dyeing, and even cyanotypes! Step into a world of imagination in this Dungeons & Dragons–inspired art-and-adventure course. Students will design their own characters, then build the world around them by crafting game boards, maps, tokens, and props using a mix of drawing, collage, sculpture, and found materials. Once the creations are ready, we will play the game together, using teamwork, storytelling, and problem-solving to guide the party through quests and surprises. Perfect for kids who love fantasy, monsters, and making things with their hands. No experience with D&D required! Taught by the amazing DM Mike Ellis, of Pieces of Eights fame. Oh!
