Students learn how images and words work together to tell strong visual stories—from character design and expressions to settings, panels, and pacing. Using drawing alongside materials like cardboard, clay, and foam core, students will build worlds inspired by their own comics, as well as idea-creation stations, their own (actually interesting!) brain “rot” characters, and more. This class develops storytelling skills, visual literacy, problem-solving, and creative confidence while encouraging experimentation and imaginative thinking. Come make prints with resident print-gremlin Maddy Bell. This class is all about experimentation, happy accidents, and getting hands-on as we create original work using collagraph, linocut, silkscreen, and monoprinting on both paper and fabric. Students will explore imagery that matters to them and learn how to translate ideas across different print processes. Come ready to have fun, try new things, and get a little messy. Step into a world of imagination in this Dungeons & Dragons–inspired art-and-adventure course. Students will design their own characters, then build the world around them by crafting game boards, maps, tokens, and props using a mix of drawing, collage, sculpture, and found materials. Once the creations are ready, we will play the game together, using teamwork, storytelling, and problem-solving to guide the party through quests and surprises. Perfect for kids who love fantasy, monsters, and making things with their hands. No experience with D&D required! Taught by the amazing DM Mike Ellis, of Pieces of Eights fame. Oh! Animalia is a hands-on, interdisciplinary adventure in the animal world. We’ll observe and learn about real creatures, then imagine and design brand-new ones of our own. Along the way, students will draw (realistic and wildly expressive), build oversized puppets, design costumes, and create sculptures, comics, and stuffed animals, plus plenty of other surprise projects. Taught by Faculty Victoria Blackwell-Hardie, an artist, scientist, child psychologist and all-around creative extraordinaire. Oh! And actual hot pizza will be served in the last class! Calling all storytellers and curious writers! In this lively, supportive writing studio, students will explore both fiction and non-fiction through fun prompts, games, and creative challenges. We will build real skills step-by-step, including developing characters, writing stronger scenes, shaping true stories from personal experience, and experimenting with voice, dialogue, and description. Each week, students will leave with new pages, new techniques, and new confidence. The session ends with a small collection of polished pieces that writers can be proud of. Oh! Cat Dirty, participants in our Merch Mania class apply a full spectrum of creative skills (ideation, articulation, drafting, composition, character development, thematic style) to making merch! Think stickers, buttons, clocks, keychains, mini zines, T-shirts, and more. Students will develop their own merch lines and learn some principles of graphic design, product development, and marketing—and get a small taste of what it means to start and run a creative small business. This new class, taught by artist extraordinaire Steve Bynoe, explores manga! Learn and refine your own manga style by looking to manga greats such as Son Goku (Dragon Ball), Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece), Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto), Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, and more. We’ll teach students about the effects of exaggerated expressions, unique panel layouts, and fast-paced action so they can develop their own manga worlds. The class will also look to Heta-Uma (“Bad-Good”), Garo style (underground), the Surrealist/Tsuge school, global manga, and more! OH! And we serve actual hot pizza on the last day of class! Steve Bynoe, of Atrium fame, leads this new character and toy prototyping lab, where students will practice and refine their drawing styles through character creation and story development. We’ll learn the fundamental tools of graphic storytelling such as storyboarding, backgrounding, line work, and more. Students’ skill-building will culminate in transforming these creations into their very own three-dimensional toy prototypes (and experimentation with 3-d pens!), with backdrops/dioramas and a full package design.
